Last month we visited one of the John Deere plants near Augusta, Georgia and were the first to check out their new lineup of utility tractors, zero-turn mowers and riding mowers. Deere & Company manufactures diesel engines under the John Deere brand name, since 1949, especially for its large, commercial-grade agricultural lawn tractors. Their diesel engine and tractor manufacturing facilities have expanded globally, and other countries like France, Mexico, Russia, Argentina, China, and India have that facility now. But eventually, they started to manufacturing other innovative lawns and other construction equipment.
For example, one big box store may carry the D125 and D160, another store carries the D130 and D155. Your local John Deere implement dealer will also carry other John Deere lawn tractors that look similar. The other tractors they carry are much more expensive and may be a better choice if you have a large property to mow, a small acreage to maintain or own livestock. I bring this up because I’ve had the pleasure of speaking with some John Deere dealers that are frustrated with the results of this practice.
Who Makes John Deere Lawn Mowers? (The History)
They end up seeing the customers when something breaks or doesn’t work correctly anymore. The number of John Deere mowers now sold in this Country is huge because of the lower price points. However, the lower price (lower quality ?) mowers are far more prone to break down and suffer from wear and tear. The cheaper models show up in their repair shops repeatedly for worn out and broken parts. Craftsman lawn tractors run the price spectrum from rear-drive models priced around $1,300 to fully featured, hydrostatic-drive units that cost more than $2,000.
It comes as no surprise that a company as big as John Deere has numerous factories spread across the globe. Their in-house engines are either made in those factories or shipped there, after production in the U.S. The parts are actually built in separate factories, then assembled in one large piece. The zero-turn models take a bit more getting used to but are extremely fast and once you get the hang of driving and operating them you’ll be whizzing around your yard in no time.

The 48 inch 3-blade deck and consistently rates as one of the better cutting “large area” decks for your lawn. The 48 inch size fits onto smaller utility trailers well and will go through the doors of most utility sheds easily. This is also one of the better bagging decks and surprisingly handles green grass clippings well. (Most baggers on lawn tractors don’t bag green grass well.) This size deck and engine combination works well for 1 to 3 acres. John Deere does not have a 46 inch 2-blade deck or a 50 inch 3-blade deck. So this extra time spent by John Deere and your local John Deere dealer is the main reason these lawn tractors cost just a little more than the competing brands riding mowers.

Who Makes John Deere Lawn Mowers For Lowes?
Most of the time, John Deere makes engines themselves for their machinery. However, for lawn mowers and machinery requiring less Horsepower, the engines are made overseas, mostly by Kawasaki, Briggs & Stratton, and Yanmar. Big box stores usually pay on 30 to 60 days so JD gets more money faster so reduces their borrowing costs and these are astronomical for makers of highly seasonal products. Hi Wade, The X300 is a step up from the S240 you were looking at but still a Long, long, way from the LX266. Here’s why – The LX266 has a K62 heavy-duty garden tractor transmission in it – the X300, S240 and all the 100 series Deeres have a light-duty K46 transmission. All of these mowers are designed to mow your flat lawn, pull a small cart, and are not designed to mow steep hills.
Lowes doesnt carry the higher end ones, but the higher ends cost a LOT. Among the nine lawn tractor brands in our survey results, John Deere is the only brand that was rated Excellent for both predicted reliability and owner satisfaction. Two other brands, Cub Cadet and Simplicity, received Good ratings for predicted reliability and Very Good ratings for satisfaction. I would take it to the dealer where you bought it and have them repair the problem.

The x300 and x304 have the same size transmissions as the la165 (48″ deck only) and la175(54″ deck only). I have to look at the real value and what is important to me. Based on the size of my yard I probably woud stick with a push mower I have a fence with a 42″ gate the only John Deere rider that will fit is an x300 with a 38″ deck. But I would not have a problem with an la135 (best value in the 100 series with a 42″ deck). But I am not changing my gate so do I spend the extra $1000 for double the rider and double the warranty so I can get 38″ deck, or just get the extra exercize and push.
The old saying you get what you pay for is surely appropriate with the LA175 as the number of complaints will justify. If you buy a John Deere at a box store keep in mind it is going to cost you about $150-$250 or more annually to run, all dependent on the size of the job. Most people buy things today think they can turn the key and it should run, these are the same people that don’t get their car serviced regularly or change their oil. The same people that complain when their car needs tons of maintenance because they didn’t care for the up keep.
IMHO, it sounds like you are trying to justify your own purchase by putting down the model you were upsold from at a JD dealer. I think the bigger point here is to understand that you get what you pay for. You also have a bit better leg to stand on so to speak if you buy it at a JD location. The other important factor is buying the “Right” mower for your situation and your yard. I ended up with the X300 after doing lots of research. At the store I said I didn’t want a machine that had sat outside on the lot. They had some new ones in boxes but said that the local JD dealer needs to assemble them and set them up.
I got more information from the dealer that conflicts with what I said above. John Deere make all John Deere mowers, not MTD. The mowers sold at HD are made at a plant in Kentucky or Tennessee and are made to “MTD standards”. The X300 and above are made in a Wisconsin plant. Anyone know about this as I’m in the market for a J.D. If it were me, I would buy from the dealership who knows more about the product and service, but what do I know.
That probably depends on your needs & budget. As with any significant purchase, the buyer needs to do some homework and buy the best model they can that meets their needs and their budget. Me, I usually set a not-to-exceed budget and find the best model & deal that I can find. I am researching different lawn tractors as we need a new one and in no way affiliated with Lowes. So the machine, service and price is the same wherever you buy – though you might get a better deal if eg the big box store has an offer . Was smart enough to give the local dealers a piece of the action — the fee for setting up the tractor that is then shipped on to Lowes or H.D.
